Pet food FAQs
How often should I groom my dog?
The answer to this question varies based on the type of dog you have, as well as what the dog does for daily activity. A golden retriever is a long haired dog and requires more grooming than short haired dogs like Labradors. If your dog is an outdoor dog it will require more grooming than indoor dogs do. This isn’t just because outdoor dogs tend to pick up more dirt; it’s also to prevent flea or tick infestations. Regular bathing and grooming are the first line of defense against these pests.
Should I use wet cat food or dry?
This is largely a matter of personal taste and budget. Dry cat food will contain the nutrients your cat needs to be healthy; but some cats do not like dry foot. It can be hard on the teeth as well, so if your cat is old and seems to be not eating well, consider a switch to wet food. Wet cat food will cost you more than dry, but many cat owners consider it an investment in their feline friend.
I want to buy my first bird, but don’t know what to get, help!
Beginning bird ownership can be intimidating; the variety of options available to you can seem overwhelming. Not to worry though, we are here to help. Finches and canaries make great beginner birds. When you buy them, consider getting two or more. These birds are social and will want company. Even a handful of canaries will cost less than a macaw, which can run into the thousands. Be sure to get a cage that won’t injure or poison your birds, and also check with your pet store for proper feeding and interaction and you will be well on your way to a rewarding relationship.
Is it true that my hamster’s teeth never stop growing?
Yes! Not only hamsters, but almost every rodent has sharp incisors that will continue growing for life. This makes it important to give your hamster, mouse, rat, chinchilla, gerbil, or rabbit something to chew on. They must continuously wear down their teeth to keep them down to a manageable size, as well as keep them sharp. There are logs and chewing posts, as well as treats designed especially for this purpose. If these things are not available, your rodent will start chewing on the bars of its cage, which can damage its teeth.
My snake won’t eat, is it sick?
Most reptiles eat far less frequently than warm blooded animals do. This is because a reptile does not constantly expend energy to maintain body temperature. Most reptiles, including snakes eat about once per week. If you have lizards such as bearded dragons or iguanas feed them crickets or baby mice. Snakes will eat baby or even adult mice depending on size. Many reptiles will eat less in the winter, if you want to offset this be sure to keep their tanks at a constant temperature year round.
