Pet Food
Life requires energy. This is a basic rule that cannot be avoided; just imagine trying to keep a pet alive without pet food! The very thought is absurd. What you feed your pet varies as much as pets do. A tarantula won’t eat cat food any more than a cat would eat birdseed.
The sale of pet food is a big industry. The largest players are dog food and cat food. It is estimated that pet food sales in the US top $14 billion annually. Dog and cat food can be found in wet or dry form.
Dry food is usually made by either baking or extrusion. The practice of baking is fairly simple; dough of carbohydrates and proteins is baked in an oven. In extrusion, the dough is exposed to a high pressure steam environment to cook them. When the food leaves the extrusion chamber, the release of pressure causes it to expand. In either case the pet food is allowed to dry after it is cooked. After it has been dried, the food is sprayed with oils and nutrients that are heat intolerant.
Owners of reptiles commonly use crickets as their pet food. Others use baby mice, tarantulas will also eat these. Bird food is made of a combination of various seeds. Rodent feed usually comes in pellets of compressed grasses. The type of greenery used changes depending on what type of rodent you want to feed.
