Pet Doors

As with beds, the most common form of pet door is the doggie door. Because dogs need to go outside to use the bathroom, and because we cannot always be home to let them out, a doggie door was a natural solution to the problem of coming home to a mess.

Dog doors come in two categories. In their simplest form, a pet door is a flap of plastic attached to a hole at or near ground level in a door. The flaps are affixed to the door at the top, and the bottom swings freely to allow the dog to go both in and out. In moderate climates these doors perform admirably.

However if your climate includes strong winds, high precipitation, or extreme highs or lows in temperature, you may want a more formidable barrier against the great outdoors. There are pet doors made to meet these demands. They are usually made of plastic or wood, and are attached at the top via a spring loaded mechanism that allows them to swing both ways, much like a restaurant kitchen door. High end doors can even come with weather stripping to form a better seal when closed!

Cats are also popular candidates for pet doors, they enjoy coming and going at their leisure, and many cats prefer to go out at night to stalk to stalk the neighborhood. Cat doors are smaller than most dog doors, but in other respects the two are identical.
