Pet supplies are not a new or novel concept. Any pet owner can tell you that while love is vital to a happy relationship with your pet, it takes more than love to keep your pet happy and healthy. This is because pets need different things than humans to survive, many times they need things we take for granted in our daily lives. Other times things we use every day are harmful or even fatal to pets. For instance chocolate is a well known toxin to both dogs and birds.

I mean look at the basic requirements for owning a dog. You need to have your dog's shots up to date. You need a collar with tags to prove this. If you want to walk your dog in most cities, you need a leash. You need pet food to feed your dog; they won't get the nutrients they need from table scraps. And these things are just the basics. If you're not planning on using your dog for breeding, the responsible thing to do is to have it spayed or neutered.

Cats are similar to dogs. They require shots and regular veterinary checkups to ensure they are healthy and parasite free. While a collar and tag are not required by law in most areas, they are a good thing to have on your cat if it ever gets lost. Unless you have your cat declawed -which is considered inhumane by many groups including the humane society and many veterinarians; you will want your cat to have a scratching post to keep your furniture intact.

Rodents are adorable pets to keep, but they come with their own supplies as well. For instance gerbils, hamsters, and chinchillas prefer to bathe in dust. If you have never seen this in action, you should look up a video of it. A chinchilla dust bathing is about the most adorable thing you could imagine. All rodents require a cage or tank; otherwise they will burrow into a couch or your walls to make a home. They also need something to chew on! This may sound strange, but most rodents' incisors never stop growing. They really need something to grind down those front teeth to a manageable size. It's also a good idea to give them an exercise wheel; this will give them a way to burn off excess energy.

Birds are beautiful and will add life and vitality to your home. Smaller birds require a bird cage, but larger ones such as parrots may be content with a roost. Bird food is something many people have misconceptions about. Most species of birds will not get the nutrients they need from birdseed. While it's ok to put birdseed out to invite wild birds into your yard, a domesticated bird requires nutrients that can only be found in green foods. There are specially formulated pellets for this purpose, they are ideal for house birds. Whatever pet you fancy, make sure you have the right pet supplies. You can find many great deals at an online pet store.
